My Computer EXPLODED… HD Fryed
Well, I’ve been sent back to the stone age… and figured I would vent a little about it.
I came home the other night to an ‘off computer’.
Which… never happens, unless someones touchin my stuff.
- So I was initially a bit salty..!
After announcing it to the world.. (myself and the wall paper being home alone) I went ahead and hit the power button.
Instantly my computer sounded like it was going to literally shoot through the celling and puncture a hole in the atmosphere.
“Ohhh.. baaallllsss!!”
– My Income Stream!!
I knew it was going to happen too — I had been thinking to past few days about getting a new computer as this one was … well basically chalked to the hilt with stuff…
… Literally — My 1 Tera byte Hard drive had like 500Mb’s left on it.
Having several 320GB external hard drives full of crap put on over the years, I put off buying new hardware over the past weeks and trudged on ahead.
Fool I was apparently…
Now I type to you from a computer that is older than anyone can even remember…
Which is newer than my other option — a computer I used when I was 13 years old programming in Visual Basics 3.0 Pro
Way back in the way back — 16 bit days… AOL 3.0
Lets just say I might as well have been on a Tandy Sensation, the first computer I EVER had…
4Mb of ram… Windows 3.0 … Sierra Network style.. lol
Anyone on the reference?
If not, its easy to explain: The First computer to ever have a cd rom… you had to push the cd door in then manually pull it out.. then manually push it back in..
.. ah, those were the days.
So, now at Donkey riding speed… I have lost every single one of my passwords and logins — I Have been using Robo form for Months.
My adobe cs4 suite… wouldn’t even fit on this computer if it was empty… and its Not: not even close…
so I’m playing a major game of catch up!
But fear not — this was a good learning experience and as soon as the good ol boys at the repair shop get done chargin me $60/hour just to look at my computer…
… to tell me, “Yup, it’s broken alright” I’ll be back and better than ever!
So maybe you have a Minute? Care to share your horrible hardware failures… because when the pendulum swings down…
Successful people laugh it off… am I right?
All the best,
Aaron

I don’t even want to think about it, but I have been thinking about doing a backup lately..
It’s not a case of it may happen Its when! In my years of repairs it has been the hardest thing to get clients to do. If your income depends on it there is only three Steps
1. BACKUP
2. BACKUP
3. ALL OF THE ABOVE
Most of us have been there, if you haven’t good luck and learn from this. I do hope you make regular of your website!!. On the brighter side you can now upgrade to bigger and better – Best of Luck…
Not only back up, but check your back ups because they don’t do you a bit of good if *they’re* not good. And don’t keep your external hard drives plugged in. Yeah, voice of experience. Hard drive crashed from USB shorting out, cuz the flash drive flaked out ((which fried the external drive which was also plugged into that USB card)…Even my month old Norton Ghost turned out to be useless because when we tried to restore, there were 6 needed folders but only 5 were on the CD.
Very painful lesson!
Really! — Man, I keep all 5 of mine plugged in ::reaching for the cables:: LoL
I actually ordered a couple more externals today. I think I’m going to try to ‘build’ an external applications drive.
That was really the kicker…
I could have lived without the files because the majority of my projects are on web servers. But not having My adobe suite and outlook… even robo form.
Was just a pain right in the …
–Perhaps a drive I can just usb into any computer and have everything I need to work?
hmmm…
But I should be able to pull an all nighter tonight and catch up. Almost done with the next 3 pack, have a couple client websites about caught up.
A little behind — no worse for wear.
I really appreciate everyone’s help and story’s on this one — Seems like a bug we’ve all come down with once or twice.
If you have a story or some advice keep em rollin!
All the best,
Aaron
Hey Aaron,
Can’t offer any advise on that a bit hopeless in that department,
only just got my computer back from the repair shop myself with it’s own set of troubles not starting and when it finally does start it crashes on me, hopefully they have fixed the problem this time.
all the best
My most recent “bug” happened near the end of January of this year (actually played pong with the blue screen of death three other times prior – for the past three months).
Anyway, during the third round of blue screen error messages I was goofing around with the CMOS settings (del button) and somehow the “bsod” quit. I thought it had fixed itself…
Then, I decided AVG wasn’t enough protection so I dug out the ole faithful Spybot S & D and installed (downloaded) it. Now, if there’s any bugs and or malware I’ll back ‘em into the corner…
Right…
So, I let S – S&D do its thing and we were good-to-go!!! Ya with me on this?
I’ve used S, S&D before and never really had a problem with taking out stuff that it found (and didn’t make sense anyway). This time was no exception.
Except, as I found out later, what I had taken out (or marked to block) actually created yet another “bsod” worse than any I had seen to date… But I didn’t know it at the time.
For nearly three weeks I poked and prodded with hardware and software until I was just about fed up with anything even remotely resembling a computer – even my calculator was at risk of ending up in file 13.
Then I woke up one morning with one off the wall “flash” in my head that just didn’t make much sense at the time but, hey, what did I have to lose?
I went into safe mode (the bsod didn’t hit until after the “welcome” screen), opened S, S&D and checked out the stuff that I had immunized my PC from and decided to “recover” it all (two entries). Then, I closed the program, hit restart and crossed my fingers, legs and just about anything else that would cross (no pun intended)…
Lo and Behold, I had my “everystuff” back – nothing lost but time – and I thought prior to all of this that I was finally gonna get something going online. Who’d a thunk M.S. would include registry entries that a spybot would tag? Well, they did and it cost me a lot of aggrevation to say the least.
Well, I still don’t have anything online to show for my 10+ years of “research” and trying to get money out of my PC instead of putting it all in. Now I’m out of “work” (another four letter word) and have nothing to “invest” with…
One way or another though, I still believe that the Internet is probably one of the very few places one can go to make a (legitimate) income and, if handled properly, quite a handsome income in a relatively short amount of time.
Now all I have to do is find a “mentor” who will help me get my idea online and in front of all the right people…
BTW, be very careful when you’re trying to “tweak” your BIOS/CMOS settings – Bad things can happen…
Thanks!
Hehe… tell me about it, fortunately i am not that old to catch windows 3, the first windows i catched was windows 95, those times were good back then, all i cared about was playing on the computer all the time.
Right now my computer fails from 5 to 5 minutes, i have 3 special softwares just to be able to surf the internet, i have some ugly brontok worm virusess that keep me from installing an antivirus.
Also i can’t reinstall windows because the power source fried and the new one doesn’t have power cables for the CD-ROM just for the graphics and HARDDISK, nothing more!. Therefore i cant reinstall windows.
Well , what can you expect from a computer that costed you 10$ and an mp3 player? i also bought it from a friend, so i got it a little cheaper.
To be honest i don’t even call it computer anymore,i nicknamed it “BRICK” ,or “ROCK” or “M********** **** ***** ***** ***t” – yes, well i have problems literally every minute with it.
Right now i’m trying to make another couple of hunderd dollars to buy a new one, since this one is from 2001 and only my wast computer knowledge keeps it alive, and the 3 extra coolers yeah…
I just found your blog Aaron and subscribed to your mails
, i’ll learn fast and have much time, i know EVERYTHING about computers and i’m not a beginer when you talk about internet marketing.
So i hope i’ll get those 300$ soon to buy myself a decent computer
, was funny to see that even other people have problems with their computer
I loved your typed page. You don’t know old yet! I remember typerwriters when you manually moved the counter to move to a new sentence. I, on the other hand, had a wonderful Smith Coronna that I finally had to send it to bed after 12 years.
Speaking of back up’s, I guess I need to figure all this stuff out, with being a newbie on the computer. Anyway, hope all goes well later. Thanks for the smiles!
Hi,
I actually came here to check out your site after purchasing something and to see if you had a place where I could change my email so I could be sure to get your emails as I don’t really use the one I purchased through too much any more and of course I found your friends only spot.
Anyway back to the pc thing, I too am using a 14 gb pc right now because for some reason after taking my “good” pc and going from 23% to 63% free space, I must have deleted something important and I can only open firefox in safe mode which is really no good to me as I have over 90 web sites and I use ff seo to check several things on them, not to mention the other add ons.
I can’t wait to get my “baby” back even though I too now know I am going to have to find a way to buy a new pc.
I really am looking forward to your emails and advice.
